the pyramid diet

Hi,

I just saw an interesting diet which may help you lower your cholesterol.

THE PYRAMID DIET

Aim to base your daily diet on the following

  • 6 servings of cereals, preferably wholegrain (2 servings = 2 slices of bread; 50g breakfast cereal; 1 pitta bread; 70g pasta — uncooked weight; or 65g rice — uncooked weight)
  • 3–5 servings of vegetables
  • 2–4 servings of fruit
  • 2–3 servings of low-fat yoghurt or cheese
  • 2–3 servings of lean meat or poultry, fish or pulses
  • Very sparing use of fats and sugar

    Do you live alone?

    Hi,

    Do you live alone?

    Better not.

Living alone doubles the risk of severe heart disease compared to living with a partner, Danish research suggests.

Women over 60 and men over 50 living alone had an increased risk of conditions including severe angina and heart attacks.

The research appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

However, heart experts said habits such as smoking and a poor diet, more common among those who live alone, were the reasons for the increased risk

    Benefits Of Cardiovascular exercises

    Hi,

I just read an interesting article which explains the benefits of Cardiovascular exercise.

    Here you go:

The benefits of cardiovascular fitness are outstanding. In fact, exercising is so beneficial that it’s surprising a person would not even consider exercising. Here’s a list of benefits from exercising:

    * Decreases risk of heart attack and stroke. Exercise helps decrease blood pressure and lower cholesterol—two major contributing factors affecting your chance for heart attack or stroke.

    * Controls weight. Exercise burns calories. The more calories you’re expending, the more weight you will lose.

    * Strengthens the heart and lowers resting heart rate. Your heart is a muscle and just as weightlifting helps strengthen your muscles, cardiovascular or aerobic exercises help strengthen your heart. A slow resting heart rate in a healthy person is a sign of a strong, efficient heart. It can push more blood with each beat than would the heart of someone with a higher resting heart rate.

    * Increases lung volume. Just as a trained individual’s heart becomes stronger, cardiovascular exercise helps and enables your lungs to expand to a greater capacity.

    * Builds and strengthens bones. Weight-bearing exercises, such as running or walking, help build and strengthen bones, which aids in the prevention of osteoporosis.

    * Increases endurance capacity. Soon you’ll be able to exercise for longer periods and go up flights of stairs without getting short-winded like you used to because your endurance capacity has increased.

    * Slows down the aging process. Believe it or not, it really does. As we age, we lose muscle mass, gain more fat, our bones weaken and we lose flexibility. Cardiovascular exercises counteract each of these problems directly.

    Soya helps you lower cholesterol

    Hi,

An interesting tidbit I read about Soya which helps lower cholesterol

The protein-packed legume had potential to prevent breast cancer, increase bone mass, alleviate hot flashes. It seemed to lower cholesterol, and thus to help prevent heart disease.

    CHD & Choloesterol

    Hi,

here's a study done by some experts and I am giving you a simple excerpt:

Experts from the Framingham Heart Study have determined that high blood cholesterol is one of the factors for a coronary heart disease or CHD. The result of their study showed that the ones who have a higher cholesterol level is the most likely he will have a coronary heart disease or CHD. Coronary heart disease is unusual at low cholesterol levels. A connection between high blood cholesterol and heart disease was also confirmed by another group of experts. Their studies showed that lowering the total LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels drastically reduces coronary heart disease. Recently, a series of trials of cholesterol using statin drugs showed that lowering the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol greatly reduces the chance of experiencing a heart attack, angioplasty (a bypass that requires surgery) and dying of coronary heart disease-related causes.

    Control Cholesterol Naturally

Blood Cholesterol is produced by our body for several purposes. In some people it is produced more than is required by our body, especially when the diet contains saturated fats. Saturated fats in the diet force the body to make too much cholesterol. The cholesterol may become high when our diet is rich in saturated fats that are found only in animal products. Plant foods do not contain any cholesterol, but the animal foods are loaded with cholesterol and fats. Most of the fast foods are very rich in fats, monounsaturated fats. If you eat lot of meats and fast foods, then the chances are that you have high cholesterol. You should get your blood cholesterol checked. Remember that without your blood cholesterol report, you can not know if you have high cholesterol.

Blood cholesterol can be both good and bad. There are two types of cholesterol: LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol & HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol. The LDL cholesterol is known as "bad cholesterol" because it gets deposited on the walls of the arteries as plaque, and restricting the flow of the blood. The HDL cholesterol, known as the "good cholesterol" helps remove the plaque from the arteries. Both the types of cholesterol are produced by our body for certain functions and are always present in our blood. The problem arises when the cholesterol is produced more than is required by our body. The following are the desirable levels of cholesterol in adults:

    • Total Cholesterol: below 200 mg/dl

    • LDL cholesterol: less than 130 mg/dL

    • HDL cholesterol: more than 35mg/dL

HDL cholesterol of less than 35mg/dL is a risk factor for heart disease, even if your total cholesterol is within limits. Both LDL and HDL cholesterol can be improved with regular exercise and eating low fat cholesterol friendly foods.

To take better care of your heart and reducing your risk for heart attack, you must understand the complete facts about cholesterol and how to control cholesterol.

Note that you do not always need to take medication for controlling your cholesterol. There are several natural heart friendly foods that are good for controlling cholesterol without any medication. Good eating habits and some exercise can control your cholesterol and triglycerides naturally.
